Social Responsibility

This semester we were asked to take a socially responsible stand through our work. I decided to take a closer look into the history of chemical warfare; specifically, Agent Orange. The image is a multi-plate print. The tree top/leaves actually is an outline of Vietnam. In the upper corner are images of the military planes that dumped the 20 million gallons of toxic, fatal chemicals. The radial images in the background are aquatinted and convey the movement and spread of the horrific contamination.

Agent Orange was the code name for a herbicide developed for the military, primarily for use in tropical climates. Although the genesis of the product goes back to the 1940's, serious testing for military applications did not begin until the early 1960's. Agent Orange was a 50-50 mix of two chemicals, known conventionally as 2,4,D and 2,4,5,T. The combined product was mixed with kerosene or diesel fuel and dispersed by aircraft, vehicle, and hand spraying. The TCDD found in Agent Orange is thought to be harmful to man. In laboratory tests on animals, TCDD has caused a wide variety of diseases, many of them fatal. Approximately 20 million gallons of herbicides were used in Vietnam between 1962 and 1971 to remove unwanted plant life and leaves which otherwise provided cover for enemy forces during the Vietnam Conflict. Agent Orange has been linked to mutations, cancers and other diseases in several epidemiological studies. The Agent Orange cancers and diseases include prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, (lung, trachea/bronchus, larynx), soft-tissue sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and multiple myeloma.

A New Semester Awaits

Classes begin tomorrow morning and I am so ready. Moving in just yesterday had forced me to put the year in high gear and now I cannot wait to start. I am ready to be busy, tired, stressed, challenged, and motivated. I welcome the new semester and all that it encompasses.

As for our theme of "Social Artistic Responsibility" I found an explanation that I think fits quite well.

"Mulana Karenga’s theory of social artistic responsibility: According to Karenga (2001), socially responsible artistic expression must meet three qualifications:
(1) It must be functional, possessing the ability to address social issues particularly affecting oppressed and marginalized communities.
(2) It must be collective, representing the fullness of the cultural experience of a people and
(3) It must be committing, offering forth a motivation for the realization of a people’s true potential and an active work against social limitations."

A month into the semester (thats all?!) and i have 2 prints and several plates that im working on right now! its been a crazy week and ideas were just going nuts so i have 2 new plates that are pretty SICK but i dont have pictures of yet cus im still etching and printing :) im very excited tho!! this week will be awesome! i cant wait!

HAHA!! Once more I find myself itching to get back to the Printshop of Blood, Sweat, and Tears! :) I am thoroughly excited for this spring semester and can't wait to smell the ink! These hands are much too clean!

Yikes! I can't believe that we are almost done with fall semester! wow, time flies! But, things have been busy and I am finally getting around to posting new prints. After messing around with my 4-circle plates, I decided that a new plate with new ideas was in order! What fun! A wandering mind and clean hardground plate left me to explore.....

i'm not sure which way is up on these so excuse the flippage :)

i'm disappointed with the 2nd print in yellow/orange...strange happenings

NEW PRINTS, NEW COLOR!

the past few days in the printshop have been filled with fun experimentation! i love this new world to print with! and actually, this plate was more of a time-killer/experiment plate to try out color on, but i'm kinda liking it! :P LOL

anyways, i am already planning my series to work on...it should be fun if i can pull it off! its been a lot of hours in the shop the past few days and i need more copper! haha! i have 2 plates started and one more planned so far! i am looking foward to this semester! :D

back for round 2 in this shop that changes lives. i am excited to work with all the new babies as well as the veterans that keep this place magical. i cant wait to start printing, but i have no idea where i want to start this semester! im optimisticly at a loss of imagery right now. i messed around online this afternoon tho and ran across and old fav of mine:

haha! 3 days and i'll be back on campus and back into the dream i call reality! i am so stoked to be an art major now and i can't wait to get my hands dirty once again in the shop of blood, sweat, and tears! summer was awesome but i am so ready to put my inspirations to work! :) here's to another great semester!

Wow....so my series is complete. As is this semester in the Print Shop of LOVE. (and blood, sweat, and tears) It's now 4:30am the morning of our last day in the shop. We turn in our final prints, eat delicious treats, and enjoy each others company for one last time. :'( Next semester will be tons of fun I am sure. With new babies in tow and a whole new sheet of copper ready to be warped by my sick mind! I will post many pictures in the next day or two! Enjoy

I'm still not sure on the title..but i like it for now. i have 2 new prints to add to the first figure print. The second two prints focus more on the concrete imagery of abuse/addiction. I thought the syringes would add some neat details since the first figure print is not super detailed. The bottle print is hard to see in the whole picture but the close up shows the bodies inside. In a sense, trying to get out but drowning in their own poison. Neither of the last two are even close to being done...I just started them this week and just printed them to see where they were going and what I want to do next. Yea! I am glad I got a solid focus on them!

After much thinking, stressing, and finally getting my baby ass in gear...i am working on my 1st final series print. i've changed it so many times and experimented with different plates and background values. As of now, i'm deciding to keep the background light and emphasize the central figure. I am still thinking of ideas for my next plate and i need to get cracking on it! I am likeing the focus on feelings of despair and doubt (slightly depressing, i know)....but i am thinking more along the lines of social self-destruction like drug abuse, depression, alcoholism, domestic violence, etc.... Might be too morbid tho. We'll see where the road takes me. :)

...i got my hands dirty

As long as it took me to get my ass going, i am really optimistic about this print. its been lots of work so far since im really not sure what i am doing but it will work itself out thru trial and error.

i do still feel tho-at times-that i am holding myself back. there is often so much personal thought and meaning behind some of my prints i dont want to explain it. etching deep feelings, while may be helpful for me, also leaves me with a strange emotion....

i have thought til my body hurts about what to do for my final series. my plates are asphaltumed and ready to go but my ideas arent there. i have scoured books, websites, other artists, and myself trying to find this perfect series theme. i am still thinking and will continue to sketch all nite!!!! yikes

so i added a shadow to the back figure as well as drypointed some more lines into the hair and face to add more value. still am figuring out what to do with it. i dont want to be finished. i think i def need to even out the facial features/shading more....there is too much contrast and not enuf gradient in value. we'll see how the days progress!

After looking at my first 2 prints again today, i still am disgusted with how it all turned out. Plus i think half of me is upset about the personal content of it all. O well...i am going to aquatint it again, and i agree with Mandy in that i need more detail in the background image. and i need to dry point some more texture in the hair and skin. hmmmm, so much to think about! lol! here's to another week in the studio!

I didn't actually start this piece until today. I did a 4 hour asphaltum/acid and then a 45 min aquatint. I think i will put it in the aquatint again because i dont like how lite it came out. oh well! I knew right away what i wanted to do for the project but because of its personal nature, i didnt want to actually complete it. Now that i printed it i still have mixed feelings but i am glad i decided to do this. It still needs a lot of work tho!

i went back today to fix my iPod drypoint. my first print was with the asphaltum. it was ok but i wanted a more uniform background value. i did aquatint the second time around to even out the back. it worked well and i made two prints to try and get the ink distributed evenly.

Today was TONS of fun with my girls from art! We had a little tie-dye party up in the studio all afternoon! Kaitlynn, Patty, Jillian, and I all stayed past 6:30 and went to dinner together! It was really cool getting to know them better and just chill with some good music and something to do together! I think we all went to get more shirts/clothes to dye at some point cus it was too much fun and who doesn't love bright colors?! We picked some pretty HUES to work with: fushia, teal, and tangerine! FUN FUN FUN! lots of cool patterns and colors came out with the different dipping and color combos!
At dinner, we talked about lots of things but what was most interesting to me was how different we all are, yet art brings us and our uniqueness all together! i know i was NOTHING like these girls in high school and to be honest, probably would never have been friends with any of them a few years ago. Thats what college is so cool for: high school means SHIT and the person u were then means little or nothing NOW. You can be who u want to be and people are cool with that. :)
And i am COOL with that!

MY NEW HOME

i can offically say that my life has changed! getting back, hands on into art again was like a shower for my soul! it felt soooo good to be using my creativity again....our first project was a self portrait. it was so much fun to create and be free to express everything...this year has brought so many new ideas and perspectives to me. and when i pulled back the paper on my first print....omgness! good feelings and for the first time all yea, i felt like i had accomplished something! yea! but i am kinda perfectionistic when it comes to art and other things so after 7 prints, i'm still not happy with it. oh well! i have all semester to explore!
